Reken maar op de millenniumpaus!
Maths, making music and becoming Pope: Gerbert did it all! In this lecture, Edward Berengoltz takes you on a journey through the remarkable story of this scholar, who became Pope around the year 1000.
The standard of European scholarship around the year 1000 was rather poor. However, a French cleric named Gerbert was to change all that: he was an extraordinary mathematician, teacher and Church Father who would even go on to become Pope. During this talk, you will learn more about his life and work. For instance, he introduced the use of Arabic numerals and developed a musical theory for organs. Together with the emperors and kings of Europe, he helped shape Christian European history.
