La Libélula is a self-portrait in the form of a dragonfly. Its two wings represent the artist’s Colombian and Belgian heritage, reflecting the experience of navigating between two parts of their identity. The body is assembled from piano parts, carefully joined with wood glue. The wings are woven from wire, creating a delicate contrast with the heavier materials of the body. For the head, boxing gloves and GPS components were combined. An alginate mould was first made to shape the head, after which the different objects were brought together with additional found materials. The choice of materials is part of the story: familiar objects from very different contexts are transformed and brought together in one creature, just as different parts of an identity can coexist. Created as a graduation project at the Secondary Art Institute in Ghent, the work explores the struggle of searching for identity and the desire for peace while experiencing a sense of chaos.
