Theremin
A modern theremin that converts movement into sound. Ultrasonic sensors measure the distance of your hand, a custom-written algorithm translates that movement into MIDI notes, and a homemade casing completes the instrument. A combination of sound, sensors, algorithms and experimentation within AlgoRhythms.
In 1919, Leon Theremin developed a unique musical instrument that can be played without touching it. By moving your hands around two antennas, you can alter the pitch and volume of the sound. In this project, the theremin is given a modern twist using ultrasonic sensors and a MIDI server. The pupils programme an algorithm that converts distance into notes and volume, and build the electronics and a constructivist-style housing themselves. In this way, sound waves, sensors, code, electronics and design come together in a single playable instrument.
