Virtual Heart Space
Virtual Heart Space is a sensory installation exploring love and relationships in the digital realm.
Virtual Heart Space is a sensory installation about love and relationships within the digital realm. The concept has its origins in an earlier narrative in which two people become so deeply intertwined through language, desire and technology that their separate worlds gradually merge. Two video sequences run synchronously on the screens. Two dancers are each situated in an abstract, empty space – their digital habitat. In this way, the installation explores the boundary between human affection and technological simulation. ‘Virtual Heart Space’ examines not so much what technology can do, but what technology does to something that is fundamentally human: love. In a digital relationship, the space between two people becomes technological in itself. The screen, language, translation and constant feedback become part of what they feel for one another. The lovers can resonate with one another ever more intensely, whilst at the same time becoming trapped in a feedback loop in which the connection constantly reproduces itself. The installation renders this situation physically tangible. Two bodies stand facing each other and become increasingly intertwined through cables, analogue video tape and written language, until it is no longer clear where one figure ends and the other begins. Their discourse becomes material.
